Sophie Wellings

Sophie Wellings

Sophie is a barrister, trained mediator and the co-founder of Courtney Legal, a multi-award-winning animated law library that has received acclaim from the most senior judiciary, the Ministry of Justice and mainstream journalists.

Overview

Sophie undertook pupillage at QEB in 2011, where she counted Katie Cowton KC, Alexander Thorpe KC and Duncan Brooks KC as her supervisors. She swiftly became a sought-after junior, instructed by top tier firms in complex financial remedy cases including multi-handed High Court trials led by Lewis Marks KC, amongst others. Sophie was known for her mature judgment and brought a forensic and focused analysis to her cases. Sophie has always been dedicated to improving access to justice and so wherever possible Sophie would also accept instructions pro bono.

In 2024 Sophie co-founded the first animated family law library in this country, Courtney Legal, together with Samantha Singer, also of QEB. The library launched to the public in 2025 with a launch event chaired by Baroness Hale of Richmond. In its first year Courtney won: Legal Supplier Innovation at Lexis Nexis Awards, Supplier of the Year at the Women & Diversity in Law Awards, Best Innovation (with Highly Commended for Best Use of Technology) in the Modern Law Private Client Awards, and Supplier of the Year at the Lexis Nexis Family Law Awards.

Sophie leads Courtney’s content development, and is responsible for production of its distinctive, award-winning audio-visual materials. Sophie led Courtney’s most impactful project to date – the extended animation of a domestic violence injunction hearing – which featured on BBC Four’s Woman’s Hour in 2026.

Courtney’s mission is to improve access to justice through public legal education and therefore Sophie and her co-founders donate access to Courtney’s materials to approved charitable partners for free.

Having had a complex journey to (and beyond) parenthood, Sophie is a passionate advocate for fertility awareness and reform, speaking at events and on podcasts.

Having been a soprano in a former life Sophie loves music (both listening to and performing) and everything to do with the outdoors. She is planning on making the most of her current relocation and seeing what the great American outdoors has to offer.
